Intellectual Property & Information Risk
Resource-conscious asynchronous learning design for an emerging UAS field
An asynchronous Articulate Rise learning experience that used strategic content curation and instructional design to deliver credible instruction in intellectual property and information risk without relying on costly original video production.

The Problem
UAS 650 covered laws, regulation, policy, intellectual property, and information risk in the rapidly developing unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) field. Original, high-quality video for every specialized topic required production capacity, subject-matter resources, time, and budget that were not readily available.
The challenge was to create credible, engaging asynchronous instruction—not simply deliver content or offer an unstructured playlist.
Limited production resources
Work within available time, budget, and development capacity.
Credible, relevant instruction
Connect general legal concepts to the developing UAS industry.
Instructional structure
Provide clear context, progression, and assessment.
Design challenge
How do you create a strong multimedia learning experience when original video production is not the most practical or cost-effective option?
A Curated Learning Experience Instead of Costly Original Production
High-quality existing subject-matter resources supplied the media foundation. William selected and organized relevant third-party videos, then built the instructional architecture that transformed independent resources into a coherent Articulate Rise module aligned to the course.
The value was not simply embedding videos. Learning objectives, written introductions, contextual summaries, purposeful sequencing, industry-specific connections, five aligned knowledge checks, navigation and continue controls, a closing recap, and a transition to the next course activity made the material usable as formal asynchronous instruction.
Why This Approach Worked
Resource-Conscious Design
Existing high-quality media reduced the need for costly original video production while providing credible subject-matter instruction.
Instructional Curation
Context, sequencing, written framing, and assessment made selected resources components of one experience—not disconnected media.
Emerging-Field Relevance
General intellectual-property concepts were connected to a specialized UAS example, supporting application within the field.
My Role
William M. Drayton III directly designed, curated, framed, sequenced, assessed, and assembled the complete Rise experience. Video instruction came from external creators identified within the module; William did not produce those videos.

Learning Objectives
Copyright purpose
Recognize the purpose of copyright law.
Copyright eligibility
Identify eligibility requirements for copyright protection.
Confidential information
Recognize the risk of employees inadvertently disclosing confidential information through social media.
Patent application
Apply introductory patent concepts through a drone-industry example.
Design Approach
Curate Before Producing
Prioritize thoughtful curation where strong subject-matter resources already exist rather than duplicating them through costly original production.
Foundation Before Application
Establish copyright fundamentals before moving into intellectual property in the drone industry.
Context Around Media
Give every resource instructional framing so learners know what to look for and why it matters.
Practice at the Point of Learning
Place knowledge checks after relevant content, directly within the learning experience.
Course-Level Continuity
Objectives, continue controls, and a closing recap connect the module to the larger Week 8 course experience.
From Legal Foundations to Information Risk
01 / Copyright Basics
Establishes the legal foundation.
02 / Intellectual Property in the Drone Industry
Connects patent protection and prior-art searches to a specialized UAS example.
03 / Protecting Data and Intellectual Property
Addresses employee communication, social engineering, confidential information, and organizational risk.
04 / Knowledge Checks
Reinforces key concepts after the relevant resources.
05 / Course Continuation
Revisits objectives and directs learners to the next Week 8 activity.
Knowledge Checks
Five multiple-choice questions provide recognition and recall practice tied directly to the selected content. They are learning practice, not high-stakes assessment.
Copyright
Two questions on purpose and eligibility.
Patents
Two questions on prior-art searches and patent types.
Information risk
One question on confidential-information disclosure.

Outcome
The completed module provided a practical, lower-cost alternative to producing original instructional video for every specialized topic. High-quality third-party media supplied subject-matter content; instructional design supplied the structure that made it usable within a formal asynchronous course.
The result was a coherent experience with a defined beginning, purposeful progression, opportunities for practice, and a clear transition back into the larger course. Thoughtful instructional design and content curation extended limited development resources without reducing the quality or coherence of the learner experience.
